The aim of this study is to explore the interpretation patterns of four different types of quantificational meaning (universal/existential/deictic/generic) of the donkey phrase in English. Specifically, we utilized two deep learning language models: ChatGPT and BERT. To analyze a dataset of 240 sentences, with 60 sentences generated by ChatGPT. We employ Next Sentence Prediction (NSP) for the analysis. Based on surprisal values, our statistical examination revealed a hierarchy of low surprisal values signifying high acceptability in quantificational interpretations: existential > universal > deictic > generic. Our findings also showed that stand-alone sentences favored pronoun usage in the donkey phrase, while in NSP, definite NP demonstrated a higher acceptability. This implies that, even in theoretical analysis, the E-type theory employing quantifier expressions may present a more suitable framework for donkey phrases compared to the discourse representation theory utilizing bound variable pronouns. - COLLAPSE

This corpus-informed research, which employs the Coh-Metrix analysis, examines the intra-grade continuity of the first and second-year mock CSAT exams, administered quarterly by four regional educational offices: Seoul in March, Busan in June, Incheon in September, and Gyeonggi Province in November. The corpus consisting of 200 reading passages compiled from the 2023 mock CSAT exams, was analyzed via Coh-Metrix to explore a broad spectrum of linguistic features across lexical, syntactic, textual, and cohesion-related indices. Overall, the results indicated that, except for the second-grade average word length, there was no statistically significant evidence to support strong intra-grade continuity. These findings provide valuable insights into the design and educational practices of the exams, highlighting areas for potential enhancement to meet test objectives more effectively. - COLLAPSE

This study aims to investigate divergent aspects of written discourse, focusing on students’ ideational, interpersonal, and textual voices in a multicultural writing course at a Korean university. The data comprised forty-three students’ self-reflections on EFL writing. ‘Intentional content analysis’ was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that, in terms of the ideational voice, 56% of the students aimed to enhance their English proficiency through writing for careers in English-related areas. They not only found pleasure in the writing process but also gained valuable insight, despite facing challenges with grammar and idea generation. Additionally, 92% of them found the course highly beneficial for their future careers and written communication. Regarding the interpersonal voice, 86% of the students emphasized the importance of various readers. Concerning the textual voice, 61% of the students lacked confidence in using relatives, conjunctions, and articles to form sentences, as well as in providing evidence and examples to construct paragraphs. The study suggests that teachers should develop students’ creative ideas through writing practices, taking into account writers’ voices in EFL writing. - COLLAPSE
